Years of uniting the film fraternity and fostering the growth of Eastern Indian cinema.

Founded in 1945, the Eastern India Motion Picture Association (EIMPA) stands as one of the earliest, most influential, and widely respected film trade organisations in India. Operating from its headquarters at EIMPA House, 98E B.N. Sircar Sarani, Kolkata, the Association unites producers, distributors, exhibitors and various stakeholders who form the backbone of the eastern Indian film ecosystem.

With a legacy spanning decades, EIMPA continues to serve as a guiding force for the growth and sustainability of cinema in Eastern India.

Our Role in the Film Industry

EIMPA serves the vast and diverse territory of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Sikkim, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and neighbouring regions. Over the decades, the Association has grown into a central force that:

  • Brings all sectors of the film industry under one collaborative platform
  • Coordinates film release protocols and trade guidelines
  • Supports the interests of single screens and multiplexes
  • Works closely with allied bodies such as FCTWEI
  • Advocates for regional films, especially Bengali cinema, to receive fair screening opportunities

Our Mission

EIMPA’s mission is to promote, protect and advance the film industries of Eastern India while contributing to the overall progress of Indian cinema. The Association focuses on:

  • Encouraging quality film production, distribution and exhibition
  • Safeguarding the rights and commercial interests of its members
  • Working with government agencies on industry-related policies
  • Strengthening the presence and reach of regional language films

Dispute Resolution & Industry Governance

EIMPA maintains a strong mechanism for handling industry disputes through amicable negotiation, conciliation and arbitration. Following established trade customs and the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, the Association deals with:

  • Business and contractual disputes
  • Release and distribution conflicts
  • Member grievances and ethical trade practices

This approach helps maintain transparency, fairness and stability across the sector.


A Cultural and Industry Hub

Beyond trade protection, EIMPA House is an active hub where meetings, screenings, discussions, cultural events and industry collaborations take place regularly. It remains a space where new ideas are shaped, challenges are addressed, and the future of Eastern India’s cinema is planned collectively.

A Historical Day

A historical day in the film industry of undivided Bengal.

On this day BENGAL MOTION PICTURE ASSOCIATION (BMPA) the erstwhile name of EASTERN INDIA MOTION PICTURE ASSOCIATION (EIMPA) was established. In this context, a meeting was held. Sri Anadinath Basu presided over the meeting. It was attended by a host of film personalities including Deboki Kumar Basu, Madhu Seal, Hemmad Sahib, Pramathesh Barua, B. N. Sircar, Satu Sen, F. Dossani, Sukumar Dasgupta, Sudhir Sanyal, Sailajananda Mukhopadhyay, Premendra Mitra, Chandrasekhar and many others.

Development & Welfare

This organization started its service thereafter for the development and welfare of the film industry in Bengal having its four wings namely Producers, Distributors, Exhibitors and Laboratory & Studio owners together under a single umbrella of this Association. This Association became a unique type of Association having all fields of the film trade activities tied under the control of a single Association.

Jurisdiction

According to the records, this Association was having its jurisdiction stretched within the vast part of the colonial British and French ruled Indian territory before & after independence. It was having its jurisdiction comprising of the State of West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Assam and all states and principalities, situated within the said states and also includes and comprises Chandernagore, Berhampore in Madras, Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, East Bengal, Manipur, Tripura & Burma.
